Lazaro Godoy (Pinar del Río, Cuba, 1977)
Godoy studied at “La Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA)” in Havana, Cuba, in 1996 was awarded first prize for “Starting Point”-his first solo choreography and performance-by The YoungArts Foundation, and in 2000 graduated from The Juilliard School, NYC. Upon Juilliard’s graduation, he was contracted by Introdans in The Netherlands and later as a soloist dancer by the Bern Ballet in Switzerland while as well being contracted independently as an artist to perform, showcase creations, and guide workshops across Europe. While in Europe, he performed repertoire by artists Jiri Kylian, Hans Van Manen, Jacopo Godani, Jo Stromgren, Nils Christe, David Parsons, Félix Duméril, Ton Wiggers, and many others.
Between 2007-2008, Godoy became rehearsal assistant of Bern Ballett along “Beauty More Than Me” creation, Stijn Celis, alongside the materialization of his freelancing career while receiving The Swiss international Choreographic Coaching award (guided by Susanne Linke). This last opportunity propelled him to living and developing as an artist in Tel Aviv, Israel performing for Inbal Pinto and Avshalom Pollak Dance Company while showcasing independently at Suzanne Dellal Center for Dance and Theater, Hanina Contemporary Art Gallery and crafting humanitarian Art Project StreetStage-through improvised filmed movement encounters and unique photography delving on the harshness of Sudanese refugees living in the streets of Tel Aviv.
Godoy is the artistic director, choreographer and performer of GoPra Performance guiding Perpetual Mobility workshops with choreographic investigation and presenting creations internationally (2014-Present). GoPra Performance’s produced creations have been supported by The Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Tigertail Productions, Miami Theater Center, YoungArts, Inkub8, FAENA, Movement Research at The Judson Church (NYC) and more. Since 2023, The Company has been based in Galicia, Spain. Nowadays, BrookDale trilogy, Healing Oasis Arts Center, and international guidance of Perpetual Mobility are the three most relevant creative endeavors at GoPra Performance.
Perpetual Mobility
Is much more than only a movement creative practice that Lazaro Godoy began developing and adding to it from experience since 2005 when he decided to train alone while he was a soloist dancer of The Bern Ballet.
Perpetual Mobility englobes the following:
● It is a time frame where the body would be in touch with gradually guided constant movement.
● There are shifts of rhythms, dynamics and textures while processing alone immersed and open to the qualities and talents of the exchanging group.
● It is a playground of discoveries where you are allowed to let go by using diverse movement approaches ranging from contemporary to Martial Arts, touch, partnering, break-dance, physical games triggering awareness dexterity, flexibility, trust, honesty and choreographic sequences of projects that are currently in development and/or production at GoPra Performance.
● Shares artistry to provoke the instinctual in each one of us to come out fearlessly and move us as we are all moved by imagination and storytelling through our physical potentials.
